Designing jewelry and other handcrafts might seem popular at craft shows or markets, but Metro brings a new light to metalsmithing and jewelry making. Reece Salinas, president of Metalmorphosis, said the club has brought her the opportunity to sell her artwork and meet people in her field.
“Through this club, I have met amazing professional artists and have had the opportunity for them to teach me skills I wouldn’t have learned otherwise,” Salinas said.
The club, which has been active for at least five years, includes 30 students from Metro and UCD. Salinas said the club is open to anyone who wants to actively participate and has an interest in jewelry, metalsmithing or any other art medium.
Metalmorphosis began with a group of jewelry design students in the art department, Salinas said. Now, the club has members from all majors — including accounting, industrial design and various art concentrations.
Salinas explained the main goal of Metalmorphosis is to create an opportunity for building a network and a sense of community for artists. The club participates in workshops to learn new techniques for metalsmithing and jewelry, as well as hosting jewelry sales and attending conferences.
“I keep the club going because it provides an opportunity for students to learn skills beyond the classroom, to meet new people, and have opportunities to sell and get exposure for their artwork,” Salinas said.
Metalmorphosis is holding a sale March 8 and 9 that will showcase jewelry and artwork. Salinas said part of the proceeds will fund the club’s visiting artist workshops. The club is also hosting a bake sale the same days to raise money for the upcoming Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Show. The event is an opportunity for senior art majors to showcase the wide variety of art they have created.
Salinas said she thinks the campus seems to enjoy buying original and unique jewelry, as well as art, through the sales held on campus.
“I have been able to make some great and lasting friendships on a campus [through this group],” Salinas said.
Metalmorphosis is looking for new officers for next year. Interested artists can stop by the jewelry lab in the Art Building, or send an e-mail to: metalmorphosis@gmail.com.
